Remembrance Sunday - War and Peace

This Sunday, Simon Lace brings us the talk in the latest of our EBC Online services. Once you have watched the video, we encourage you to reflect on the bible text and join us in the prayer that follows below.

The talk will be available on our You Tube channel from 10am on Sunday 21st November.

Readings:

Romans chapter 12 verses 17 to 18 (New International Version)

Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone. If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.

Romans chapter 14 verse 19 (New International Version)

Let us therefore make every effort to do what leads to peace and to mutual edification.

Romans chapter 16 verse 20

The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet. The grace of our Lord Jesus be with you.

Prayer and Reflection
Loving God, we respect, honour, remember, and pray for those we have lost, and we pray for peace. We are thankful for our freedoms, in this life and the next, hard won and bought at such a costly price. Help us to honour these sacrifices Lord, with lives lived at war against evil and in peace with each other, so far as it depends on us. In Jesus’ name. AMEN.

Questions to Consider:

1. Do you think it is ever ‘the lesser of two evils’ to take a human life? If so, under what circumstances?
2. Are you living at peace with everyone, so far as it depends on you? If not, can you do anything about it?
3. Is there someone you know who is fighting a hard battle of some sort? If so, how can you help them to find peace?
4. Is there someone you know who has been affected significantly by war? Will you pray for them and perhaps find other ways to help support them?
5. How does your desire for peace reveal itself to other people? Do you “make every effort to do what leads to peace and to mutual edification”… or is your desire for peace just empty words?
6. Do you believe that there is a real enemy of God, Satan, who is at work to bring evil into the world and into our lives?
7. What can you do you make of the idea that God is a God of peace and yet at war with Satan and the forces of evil?
8. In your own life, are you suing for peace with devil, or actively at war with him?
