Hot Topics: Part 1 - 'Love Should Not Hurt'
This Sunday, Philippa Marsh brings us the talk in the latest of our EBC services. We encourage you to reflect on the bible text and join us in the prayer that follows below.
Here are some questions to consider:
Readings:
Matthew chapter 22 verses 36 - 40
“Teacher, which is the most important commandment in the law of Moses?”
Jesus replied, “‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. A second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbour as yourself. The entire law and all the demands of the prophets are based on these two commandments.”’
John chapter 13 verses 34 - 35
So now I am giving you a new commandment: Love each other. Just as I have loved you, you should love each other. Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples.”
Romans chapter 13 verse 10
“Love does no wrong to others, so love fulfils the requirements of God’s law.”
Prayer and Reflection:
Lord, you have said that to truly love you then I must also love my neighbour, which can be difficult when we disagree or lifestyles clash.
Yet in overcoming those difficulties it is possible to see the miracle that you love someone like me.
Teach us to love, Lord, as you have loved us that this world might be a better neighbourhood in which to live and share.
Amen
Questions to Consider
1. How am I loving others?
2. How interlinked do you see the 2 great commandments (Matthew 22:36-40)?
3. How does a radical experience of grace help us to love?”
4. Who can you become a Spiritual Parent to, and what would that look like?
5. When you look in the mirror, what do you see?
6. Why do you think we often come up with ways of limiting Jesus’ command to love our neighbour?
